Description

Gold Head Montana Nymph in a red/black coloration. This is a classic and very popular stonefly nymph pattern. It is designed to imitate a variety of large aquatic insects, particularly stonefly nymphs, which are a major food source for large trout. The gold bead head adds weight to help it sink, and the distinct black and red body with a bushy hackle makes it a very visible and attractive pattern. The red color can also act as a powerful attractor or suggest an injured or bleeding insect.

Type of Fly: Nymph (specifically, a stonefly nymph imitation with attractor qualities).

Target Fish: This fly is most effective for larger species that feed on substantial meals, making it a great choice for trout (especially rainbow and brown trout), steelhead, and salmon.

When to Fish: The Montana Nymph is effective year-round. It is particularly useful during periods of high water, in murky or off-color water where the red can stand out, or in the early spring and late fall when natural stoneflies are active. It can be fished successfully at any time of day.

Saltwater or Freshwater: This is a freshwater fly.

Best Fishing Locations: This fly is best fished in fast-flowing rivers and streams, where stoneflies naturally live and cling to the bottom. It works well in deep runs, riffles, and around rocky structures where fish might be holding.
