The Floating Temptation for Big Fish
The Booby fly is one of the most effective—and visually unique—nymph imitations in modern fly fishing. This fly pattern is specifically designed to defy gravity by staying afloat even when fished right along the bottom.
What is a Booby Fly?
The defining feature of the Booby is its two large foam eyes, often made from EVA foam. These eyes act as a cork or buoyancy device, giving the fly its signature behavior in the water.
How and Why They Work
The Booby fly is not designed to swim freely, but to be fished in combination with fast-sinking lines and a short leader.
| Function | Effect on the Fish |
| "Nose-Down" Presentation: | The buoyant eyes force the fly to point straight down toward the bottom. This accurately imitates a newly emerging or struggling insect trying to rise, or a nymph attempting to crawl up. This vulnerable position is an irresistible trigger for predatory fish. |
| Suspended Bait: | When the fly is resting near structure, the sinking line lifts the fly just inches off the bottom, placing it at the perfect height for cruising fish. |
| Aggressive Movement: | By quickly stripping the line, the angler can make the Booby fly dive and bounce along the bottom, creating an aggressive, erratic movement that provokes strikes from shy or large fish. |
When to Use the Booby
The Booby fly is particularly effective in these scenarios:
-
Deep Water: Perfect for fishing in deep lakes or reservoirs where fish hold tight to the bottom.
-
Fishing Over Weeds & Silt: Its buoyancy prevents the fly from getting snagged in vegetation or mud on the bottom, allowing you to fish cleanly over areas where other flies would get stuck.
-
Trout and Rainbow Trout: Incredibly successful when targeting large rainbow trout (e.g., in put-and-take fisheries) and aggressive wild trout.
Add this floating temptation to your fly box. The Booby fly gives you a unique tool to fish the hard-to-reach bottom layers and force big fish to commit!
