Description

This pattern is designed to mimic the adult damsel fly, which often lands on the water's surface to lay eggs or when blown there by wind. Unlike the nymph, which is fished subsurface, this is a dry fly (or an emerger/cripple pattern) meant to float. Its prominent wings, segmented body, and bright blue color (a common coloration for many damsel fly species) make it a highly visible and attractive pattern to fish feeding on the surface.

Type of Fly: Dry Fly / Surface Imitation (specifically, an adult damsel fly or a crippled emerger).

Target Fish: This fly is excellent for catching trout (especially larger rainbow and brown trout), grayling, and other species that feed on surface insects. Its size and profile are particularly appealing to opportunistic feeders.

When to Fish: This fly is most effective during the late spring and summer months, particularly on sunny, warm days when adult damsel flies are active around the water. It can be fished throughout the day, but often shines during mid-day when damsel flies are most active, or during evenings when fish are looking up for larger meals.

Saltwater or Freshwater: This is a freshwater fly.

Best Fishing Locations: This fly is a fantastic choice for still waters like lakes and ponds, especially when fished along weed lines, over submerged structure, or near lily pads where damsel flies emerge and lay eggs. It can also be productive in the slower-moving sections of rivers where adult damsels might be present.
