Description
CDC Midge in black. This is a very delicate and effective dry fly pattern, designed to imitate small adult midges (Chironomids) that often hatch in huge numbers and hover over the water. The key to this fly's effectiveness is the use of CDC (Cul de Canard) feathers, which come from around the preen gland of a duck. These feathers are naturally buoyant and absorb very little water, allowing the fly to float perfectly in the surface film, mimicking a natural midge.
Type of Fly: Dry Fly. This pattern is meant to be fished on the water's surface, imitating an adult insect.
Target Fish: CDC Midges are exceptionally effective for trout (especially rainbow, brown, and brook trout) and grayling, particularly when fish are rising selectively to tiny insects. They can also be effective for other small, surface-feeding fish.
When to Fish: This fly is a fantastic year-round pattern, as midges are one of the few insects that can hatch even in colder temperatures. It is particularly effective in winter and early spring, as well as on calm summer evenings. It can be fished successfully at any time of day, but is often best during periods of calm water and light winds.
Saltwater or Freshwater: This is a freshwater fly.
Best Fishing Locations: The CDC Midge is incredibly effective in still waters like lakes and ponds, especially when fish are "sipping" tiny insects from the surface. It also works very well in the slow-moving pools and eddies of rivers and streams.
