Description
Some of the smallest insects are often the most interesting to both fish and fisherman. Midges (Chironomidae) are among these insects, typically appearing in massive quantities when they hatch. Found in still waters like lakes and slow-moving sections of rivers and streams, they are a vital food source for many species, including trophy brown trout.
As one of the largest families within the order Diptera, midges have a lifecycle that goes from egg to larva, pupa, and finally adult. They are among the first and last insects to hatch during the season—in some areas, they even bring fish to the surface during winter. When fish feed on hatching pupae hanging in the surface film or on adult midges, they often do so with a classic, rhythmic "head-and-tail" rise.
Success with midges requires patience, long leaders, and fine tippets. A proven tactic is to fish an adult midge imitation with a pupa as a dropper. And remember—never underestimate these tiny wonders; small flies truly do catch big fish.
The Stealthy Bloodworm – J:son Midge Larva 5 Black (#18) The J:son Midge Larva 5 in Black is a high-precision imitation of the midge in its earliest stage. Often referred to as "bloodworms" (though they come in many colors), these larvae live in the silt and debris at the bottom. The Black version provides a stark, clear silhouette that is incredibly effective in both clear and slightly stained water, mimicking the dark-bodied larvae that are common in many lakes and slow rivers.
Tied on a size #18 hook, this fly is small enough to match the hatch perfectly, yet we have made a crucial design choice for the angler: the hook eye is no smaller than a size #18. This means you can thread your leader easily, even in cold weather or low light, without the struggle usually associated with micro-flies. Featuring J:son’s anatomical segmentation and lifelike translucency, this black larva is a "must-have" for technical nymphing when fish are focused on the smallest life forms on the bottom.
