What is "Utterfiske" (Otter Board Fishing)?

"Utterfiske," or otter board fishing, is a traditional method that uses a wooden board—often simply called the "otter"—to present baits in a unique, highly effective manner.

The Principle

Lateral Movement: The wooden board, or otter, is designed with an angle that allows it to drift or be pulled outward from the bank or boat in a sideways direction.
Water Pressure: The specific angle and shape of the board cause water pressure to push it laterally as it moves through the water.
Tackle Setup: A main line is attached to the otter, and several leaders (tafsar), armed with baits—usually flies or small lures—are attached to this line.
Coverage: As the otter moves sideways, the baits cover a significantly large area of the water.

How It Works

The angler casts the otter out and allows it to drift sideways, either by using the current or by slowly drawing in the main line.
The baits systematically fish a broad area, greatly increasing the chance of a strike.
When a fish takes the bait, it is signaled by a change in the otter's movement or a sudden tightening of the line.
The angler then reels in the line and lands the fish.

Important Considerations

Board Design: The angle and shape of the wooden board are crucial for ensuring it moves correctly in a lateral direction.
Bait Choice: Flies (like the Royal Coachman double hook) and small lures are common choices for otter fishing.
Line and Leaders: The line must be strong enough to handle the drag pressure from the otter board and any potential catches. The leaders must also be appropriately strong and correctly positioned.
Regulations (Crucial!): Otter board fishing (Utterfiske) is prohibited in many locations, and double hooks are sometimes subject to specific fishing regulations. It is essential that you check local fishing rules and regulations before using this method.
